Cory Golis

On the last day of the 1998 Anchor House Ride for Runaways, Cory Golis, 15, of Hopewell Township was struck and killed by a car.

After his tragic death, Cory’s family, in conjunction with the Anchor House Foundation, created a scholarship fund in his name — The Cory Golis/Anchor House Foundation Scholarship Fund.

The goal is to provide tuition assistance to deserving high school students and recent high school graduates to attend college, trade, or technical school.

Purpose of the Program

The Cory Golis/Anchor House Foundation Scholarship Fund is awarded yearly to one or more graduating high school seniors or recent graduates. The purpose of the scholarship fund is to provide financial support and encouragement to students entering a 2- or 4-year college or university, technical or trade schools. In awarding scholarships, the selection committee gives priority to students who are planning a career in the fields of counseling, theology, or teaching. Academic achievement, participation in extracurricular activities, financial need, and the ability of the applicant to overcome personal hardships are all taken into consideration when applicants are chosen for scholarships. The applicant must fill out an application, which includes a personal statement, and two letters of recommendation.

The program, also gives priority to, but is certainly not limited to, the following:

  • People who have been clients of Anchor House or any of its programs.

  • People who have volunteered at Anchor House or any of its programs.

  • Individuals recommended by the Anchor House management or staff.

  • Individuals recommended by the selection committee.


Aid may be granted to a candidate for more than one year based upon continued eligibility.
 

The scholarship committee is composed of members of the Anchor House committee, management, and staff, one or more members of the Golis family, and anyone else accepted by the committee as a volunteer.

Proceeds for distribution are from the previous year’s interest and dividends; it is the committee’s desire not to use the principal.

Cory's Ride

In January of 1999, the Anchor House Ride for Runaways Planning Committee authorized a committee of five people to plan and coordinate the first annual “Cory’s Ride.”

The purpose of the Ride was not only to raise money for the Scholarship Fund, but to continue to honor Cory’s memory. The last year we awarded $18,000 to 11 amazing young men and women.
