The Anchor House Ride for Runaways Support Team

The mission of the Support Team is to provide for the personal safety of all participants, riders and support staff. Through the identification of competent, dedicated, selfless volunteers possessing the appropriate gifts, talents, professional skills and understanding necessary to this endeavor, a team will annually be formed that cares for the personal well-being of all in a spirit of community.
Its vehicles and the rest stops it provides for the riders are all identified as SAG, which is generally accepted to be an acronym for Support And Gear.
The first ride was composed of four riders who traveled from Jacksonville, Florida to Trenton, New Jersey.  For the most part, they were their own support staff.  Over three decades four has grown to 200 and almost none has grown to 30.  While the logistics and personal safety needs of four is the same as 225 on one level, obviously the housing, medical coverage, emergency services, the daily transfer of luggage, technologically current communications, weather monitoring, updated route safety assessments, food and beverage provisions along the route, recruitment and assignment of competent and congenial SAG and rover teams has grown to monumental proportions
Those who provide support to the riders must function as a team.  While a variety of individual skills and competencies are necessary, none is more important than others. An environment of positive interdependence is necessary to accomplish the task of support to the riders.
Most important is the identification of competent support team members.  It is necessary that the team receive appropriate training in the functions of the team.  For the most part, any team member can assume the role of any other team member at any time.
The Anchor House Support Team has an excellent and deserved reputation as a model team for any ride event.  Through continued dedication, this reputation can be maintained.  We must always keep in mind that the work of the support team is done for the kids served by Anchor House.
