Year 21 - A third decade of riding for Anchor House

Russ Buckley

Russ Buckley

Dear friends,

I hope you and your family are all doing well, and perhaps are even beginning again to do the little things that bring joy to each and every day. That is certainly happening for me, as post-vaccination days have given me comfort to begin to see family and friends again. One thing that COVID did not stop is my getting on the bicycle, and the change in weather (& hours of daylight) means more time to ride outdoors.

As you have come to expect, once again, for the 21th time (I guess I am legal now….), I am getting back on my bike and pledge to cycle 500 miles in support of the mission of Anchor House, beginning Sunday, July 11th. This continues to be a challenging and exciting event for me, and I am hopeful that we can partner together again for this great cause. I know that many of you are inundated with requests to support many organizations, and I am so grateful for your ongoing support for this cause over the years.

Anchor House is providing a variety of options for the event (similar to last year), but I will be participating in the local 500-mile event, which means that we will be riding a route each day that has a local starting and ending point. This will allow groups to ride together while also enjoying the comforts of home each night. While this means that I will not have to ride these miles alone, plan my own routes or make fun of my own singing, it does mean I will do my best to update you on progress along with other fun facts during the week.

My fellow riders and I continue to pedal forward because we really believe in the mission of Anchor House - helping children, teens, young adults and families create better lives for themselves and their families. Anchor House has been busier than ever during the last year, continuing all their programs while adjusting to the world of COVID as well as the dealing with the impact of state budget cuts on their services. While all of this was occurring, Anchor House was able to purchase an additional building in Trenton. This site will allow them to expand their reach and to increase their ability to provide transitional housing, as part of the building will be converted into four single apartments. This is your financial support at work each day, and I thank you on behalf of Anchor House.

One final update on the personal side that I wanted to share with each of you. After 20 years of supporting Anchor House via this ride, I am excited to increase my commitment to this organization by joining their Board of Directors effective in June. I am grateful, excited and feel blessed to have the opportunity to serve in support of so many young people in need.

Thank you in advance for your support. I truly appreciate your generosity, both this year and during the prior 20. Together we have made a difference and we will continue to do so.

All the best - Be smart and stay safe – Russ
